The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Honorable Abubakar Buba, alongside staff from the Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project and the Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA), recently conducted an assessment of ongoing dredging activities on the Kaduna River and desilting of its major tributaries. This initiative aims to mitigate predicted flooding in 2025, as forecasted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).
The visit was intended to reinforce and realign the state government’s efforts to manage the Kaduna River, as well as evaluate the situation of residents affected by flooding along the riverbanks despite existing dredging activities.
Honorable Buba commended the collaboration between key partners, including ACReSAL, NIMET, the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA), for their proactive role in desilting drainage systems and clearing river channels ahead of the rainy season.
The assessment underscores the Kaduna State Government’s commitment to protecting the lives and properties of its citizens under the leadership of Governor Senator Uba Sani.
Moving forward, both the government and its partners have agreed to continue dredging and clearing debris to ensure the free flow of water and reduce flood risks.
